Summary • Childhood obesity is on the rise • Responsibility of parents or schools? • Eating habits develop in youth • We propose a Nutrition Fair
Introduction • Nutrition should be emphasized in elementary and secondary schools • Garfield Elementary School • 8% of 7th graders in “Healthy Fitness Zone” • Concentration on nutrition for preteens
Discussion • We surveyed 7th and 8th graders • Students would benefit from a nutrition program
Discussion • Interviewed Jessica Cobian • No focus on nutrition or health during school hours
Discussion • Being in shape boosts self-confidence • Diet affects mood • The media’s “standards” for body image are not realistic
Conclusions • School is currently taking steps to improve physical atmosphere • Adequate physical programs • Lacking health and nutrition • Students would be willing to participate in our Nutrition Fair
