BRIEF HISTORY OF ZNBC • The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) is the oldest, widest and largest Radio and Television Service provider established by an Act of Parliament in 1987, which was passed to transform the Zambia Broadcasting Services from being a Government Department under the
HISTORY CONTINUED…… Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services into a statutory body called the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation • The principal activity of the Corporation is to provide Information, Entertainment and Education to the people of Zambia.
ZNBC TRANSMISSION • ZNBC transmits across three Radio channels namely Radio 1, Radio 2, and Radio 4 and two Television channels namely ZNBC-TV and TV2. Radio 1 broadcasts in seven local languages namely Bemba, Lozi, Kaonde, Lunda, Luvale, Nyanja and Tonga.
NEW MEDIA • Only 11% of the Zambian population has internet access(World Bank,2010) • Immediacy (on-demand access to content) • Youthful appeal(Facebook and Twitter) • Interactivity • Virtual space(communities) • Elitist medium • Expensive for the majority of the people especially rural people
Traditional Media • ZNBC is 90% traditional media • Lacks immediacy • Low interaction levels • Cuts across all classes of people • Still remains the main source of information for rural population
ZNBC SITUATION • ZNBC is still heavily operating as a traditional media outlet. • Still using Analogue transmission • The coming of new media not significantly impacted the Corporation
WAY FORWARD • ZNBC is preparing for the Digital Migration (SADC Deadline is December, 2013) • ZNBC has presence on Facebook and Twitter with a following of close to 40,000 people • Platform used for external communication and feedback channel • Digital Migration will provide a platform for greater use of new media
WAY FORWARD CONTINUED……. • ZNBC website is being upgraded(regular updates) • ZNBC runs hourly news bulletins on radio and 2 hourly on TV2 • Plans are underway to start live streaming
