Status ofGlobus activities Massimo Sgaravatto INFN Padova for the INFN Globus group globus@infn.it
Tasks • Globus deployment • Security • Information Service • Resource Manager • Data Access and Migration • Fault Monitoring • Execution Environment Management
Globus deployment • Already done: • Installation instructions for Globus 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 • Modified Globus 1.1.3 software kits (including bug fixes) on AFS • /afs/infn.it/project/infngrid • Installation instructions for Globus 1.1.3 • Supported OS: Linux and Solaris • 1 GIIS per site • LSF and Condor as local resource manager systems • Italian Certification Authority • Script for post-install operations • To do: • Tools to enable local administrators to quasi-automatically install and deploy Globus • Next step: • Binary and configuration files available on AFS (sw repository) • Shared read-only NFS Globus install directory on each site • Script for deployment on local resources
Security (GSI) • Already done: • Evaluation of the Globus security architecture (see Francesco’s presentation) • INFN certification authority able to issue Globus certificates • Script to “convert” certificates • To do: • Definition and implementation of relationships between Italian CA and other CAs • Integration of existing applications with GSI authentication mechanisms • Management of groups of users
Information Service (GIS) • Already done: • INFN MDS server (serving Globus 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 installations) • Web form for INFN department enrolment (Globus 1.1.1 and 1.1.2) • INFN GIIS (serving Globus 1.1.3 installations) • Configuration instructions for GIIS • Web interface for browsing • Preliminary activities on integrating the default schema with other info (file system) • To do: • Tests on performance and scalability • Definition and implementation of the GIS architecture • Other tools and interfaces for Grid users and administrators • Integration of the default schema with other info • Which info are necessary ???
Resource Management (GRAM) • Already done: • Job submissions on remote resources • Tests with Condor and LSF as underlying resource management system for Globus • Some bugs found and fixed • Problems on scalability and fault tolerance • Preliminary tests with PBS as underlying resource management system for Globus • Evaluation of RSL as uniform language to describe resources • Translation from RSL to the specific resource description languages • “Cooperation” between GRAM and GIS • Submission of Condor jobs to Globus resources (Condor-G and GlideIn mechanisms) • To do: • Modification of Globus scripts for LSF (to manage clusters) • Other tests with GRAM in conjunction with local resource management systems • Tests with real applications • How can we solve the problems on scalability and robustness ???
Data Management • Already done: • Preliminary tests with Globus tools for data access and transfer in LAN and WAN environments • To do: • ??? • Evaluation of Gsiftp ??? • Evaluation of Replica management tools ??? • Usage of the Globus tools for data transfer for real use-cases (i.e. CMS HLT activities) ???
Other tasks • Fault Monitoring (HBM) • Evaluation of HBM for fault detection (for “system” and “user” processes) • Data collectors (implementing automatic recovery mechanisms) • … but the HBM package is not seeing active development • Execution Environment Management (GEM) • Evaluation of GEM as service for code migration • … but the GEM service now provides only very limited capabilities (executable staging)
