Finger Count • Example : 4 + 4 = 8 • Hold up the number of fingers for that represent the first addend on one hand • Hold up the number of fingers that represent the second addend on the other hand. • Counts how many fingers in all to get your sum.
Adding using Manipulatives • Example: 3 + 2 = 5 • Represent the first addend with yellow counter manipulatives. • Represent the second addend with red counter manipulatives. • Count the number of yellow counters. • Count the number of red counters. • Count the number of counters in all to get a sum.
Using a Model to Create an Addition Sentence • Write down the number of green stars to represent the first addend. • Write down the number of yellow stars to represent the second addend. • Add together how many stars are in all in the model to get the sum. • Example 2 + 2 = 4
Using a Number Line to Add • Example: 5 + 4 = 9 • Start at zero and jump five spaces because this number represents the first addend. • Jump four more spaces because it is plus four and this number represents the second addend. • The number that you land on is the sum of your addition sentence.
Addition in Word Problems. • Jane has 1 apple for the teacher. Her best friend, Kate has 3 apples to give to the teacher. How many apples will the teacher have in all if both girls give her apples. • 1 apple + 3 apples = 4 apples in all
