Introductions Are you new to the game? • Recently deputized with the state’s or branch’s archives. • Feeling overwhelmed by the amount of paper in your custody. • Concerned that your branch’s history will be lost. • For legal reasons, you need to know what you are required by law to keep. Or, are you a seasoned veteran? • Know what to keep but need advice on where and how to donate the collection. • Want to know what other states and branches are doing. • Minutes never seem to reflect what we really do as a branch. What effect does this have in the future?

What to Save? Aim for historical significance! Directories/Membership Lists Photographs Artifacts/Memorabilia Correspondence (and emails) of a significant nature Scrapbooks Speeches • Founding documents • Clippings • Audits and Budgets • Minutes • Bylaws and revisions • Publications • Press Releases • Audio Visual Recordings
What to toss? Aim for Informational value! Old forms, receipts, requests orders Notes, telephone messages, post its State/National Records (with exceptions) • Drafts, working copies • Routine correspondence • Duplicates • Externally created publications
