1. Popular Sovereignty • Who gives the government powers? • Popular Sovereignty • A government in which the people rule.
2. Republicanism • How are views represented in government? • Republicanism= based on this belief: people exercise power by voting for their political representatives.
3. Federalism • How is power shared? • Federalism- system of government in which power is shared between a central and state governments. • State Powers called reserved powers. • National government powers called delegated powers. • Shared powers called concurrent powers.
4. Separation of Powers • How is power divided? • Separation of Power- division of the basic government roles into branches. Why is this important? • US Constitution Legislative Executive Judicial
5. Checks and Balances • How is power evenly distributed? • Checks and Balances- each branch of government can exercise check, or control, over the other two.
6. Limited Government • How is abuse of Power Prevented? • Limited Government- powers are restricted or denied by the Constitution. • Article 1:Section 9 lists powers denied to Congress • Ex. No favorites of one state over another • Article 1: Section 10 forbids the states to take certain actions • Ex. No state shall, without consent of Congress, engage in war unless actually invaded
7. Individual Rights • How are personal freedoms protected? • Individual Right- personal privilege and rights. • Government can not dictate what you say or write. • People have the right to meet peacefully
