AN INNOVATIVE UNDERDROUND POWER SHEME Numerical Modeling

Discover an innovative hydroelectric scheme on a small island in Portugal through detailed numerical analyses with FEM models developed at the University of Porto. The scheme includes reversible units with a 450m elevation difference between upper and lower tunnels, featuring a 5.2km tunnel, storage gallery, cavern-pumped station, and auxiliary gallery. Explore geomechanical characterization of basalt and volcanic materials and FEM models for lower reservoir stages. Analyze structural behavior, settlements, and safety factors for optimized performance.

  2. This presentation is related to an UPHS innovative hydroelectric scheme in a small island, Portugal. Also presents numerical analyses performed considering FEM models developed at University of Porto.

  3. The UPHS system is equipped with reversible units with a differential elevation of about 450m between an upper tunnel and a lower storage tunnel. • The repowering included the sequence of underground works: • 5.2km tunnel located at upper level • A gallery for storage with a total capacity of 40 000m3 • A cavern pumped station • An auxiliary gallery
