Timing • Varies widely for part-time students: • If transferring to full-time • If leaving your FT job for a FT legal job during law school • If staying at your current job through law school • If planning to be a big firm summer associate • Talk with your counselor about your plan

How To Get Legal Experience • Explore law-related work w/your current employer • Consider moving to a full-time job at a law firm • Explore a summer sabbatical/leave of absence • Use vacation time to attend conferences/CLEs • Extern for a judge this summer or next year • Be a research assistant to a professor • Join a law journal or participate in moot court • Consider limited projects for solo practitioners/small firms – find through networking • Write articles on legal topics – work with practitioners • Volunteer on weekends/breaks or on projects you can do online (Illinois Legal Aid Online)
Career Planning Steps • Read the 1L Career Services Handbook • Follow the Where To Start materials on the CSO website for Self-Assessment, Information Gathering and Career Planning • Update Your Resume for the Legal Market • Meet with your OCS counselor • Read the OCS blog and emails • Visit our CSO library – many publications
Network • 85% of all jobs are not posted! • Contact individuals in your network (former employers, parents’ friends, friends of parents) to build relationships – make a list • Meet Loyola alums and current students • Talk to faculty, legal writing instructors, and tutors about your career path and for advice • Attend OCS programs to meet attorneys • Join bar associations • Read 1L Handbook Networking Guide
