Mission and Vision “The mission of the Office of Career, Counseling and Support Services is to provide leadership and guidance to state schools in creating environments that support and sustain career ready students. “ http://www.mde.k12.ms.us/career-and-technical-education/office-of-career-counseling-and-support-services • Promote student success by ensuring they are career ready. • Develop partnerships with counselor educators, business and industry, community colleges and policy makers. • Inform stakeholders of the positive impact of both an academic pursuit and the career technical option for students. • Apprise counselors and support services of their specific roles and duties (K-12).
Career Focused PSC • Career development curriculum K-12. • Career’s have no gender. • Adopt and integrate non-traditional (high skill, high wage, high demand) experiences for girls. • ICT 1 and ICT2 students should be well prepared for researching and exploring career pathways and high school choices. • Career Pathways are selected in high school to include both academic/STEM and CTE choices.

Legislation 37-9-79 – Intention is to help Mississippi build comprehensive counseling program involving all stakeholders to assure student success and to secure a future workforce. Amended: Effect July 1, 2014 • Changes the title for Professional School Counselor (PSC) • Use multiple data sources to help students make informed decisions (Explorer/ Choices/iCAP) • 80% of time to Direct and Indirect Delivery of Services (ASCA) • Utilize Core Curriculum (MS Framework/ASCA Competencies) • Abide for ASCA Code of Ethics • Responsive Services (individual, group, crisis counseling) Mississippi Department of Education would like to initiate the SPARC Student Personnel Accountability Report Card to recognize districts and schools for “best practices” in comprehensive counseling programs
How do Comprehensive Counseling Programs Impact Student Success? Sad News: • Dropouts are created in the third and fourth grades. • Prison systems capacity is assessed on grade these level failures. Why: • Higher Graduation Rates • Reduced Drop-out Rate • Decrease in Absenteeism and Tardiness • Decrease in Disciplinary Incidents • Increase in Postsecondary Education
Counselor’s Role in Common Core State Standards Understand It – CCSS uses literacy embedment across curriculum. Support It – Leadership role; look at research and data Act On It – Prepare for these misconceptions: p.10 “Students ‘should’ already know how to read” “I don’t have time” “I’m not a reading teacher” CCSS is supported by ASCA in policy and standards including high standards for all, rigorous coursework, school counselors as leaders, use of data, and collaboration.
