The Continued HIV Epidemic in the United States • 56,300 people infected with HIV in 2006 • Anti-retroviral therapy has changed the course of the epidemic for infected individuals • An estimated 1 million people are currently living with HIV
Cell Phones and SMS • In 2008, 87% of Americans had cell phones • SMS is rapidly becoming a common mode of communication • SMS may offer promise as a medium for implementing health interventions outside of a clinic setting • Of 53 health intervention studies that evaluated the use of SMS interventions, only 9 were conducted in North America
Tailored Health Communication • SMS messages can be tailored to address an individual’s needs, interests and concerns • Tailored health messages have been shown to be more effective than non-tailored messages • Tailored messages can promote patient-centered care by promoting • Adoption and maintenance of healthier, safer sexual behaviors • Medication and appointment adherence • Interaction with credible health information sources • General health and wellness • Social support
