Co-teaching is • An option for providing special services • Implemented by two certificated educators • Sharing responsibility for instruction (planning, teaching, assessing) • Ensuring ALL students are full class members • Focus is access to curriculum NOT –an extra set of hands NOT – alternating classroom responsibility NOT – one person teaching, the other roaming

  5. Research • A few studies document moderate effect size for student outcomes • Many studies focused on concerns and perception • Qualitative studies reveal a preponderance of “one teach-one assist” which is not considered ‘highly recommended’ CONLUSION: More research is needed

Results DeKalb County* Closer to home North Central High Co-taught math classes outperform other math classes Blaine Middle School Better outcomes in Math than ELA • ELA –Passing rate for SWD increased 10.7% between 2007 and 2010, while State decreased 3.8%. • Math –Passing rate for SWD increased 3.7% between 2007 and 2010, while State decreased 2.5%.
