  2. INTRODUCTION

  3. UNIT QUESTION • What does it mean to grow up? 1. Responsibility • Keeping a job • Taking care for yourself and your family • Paying your own bills 2. Mentally growing up • You want to learn more about things • You care more about yourself and others

  4. 3. Physically growing up • Becoming taller • More hair • Broader shoulders As you grow up, you step in a new world. You discover more about stuff you didn’t even know you could do and you learn more about yourself. I think that is the most beautiful thing of growing up.

  5. WHO IS J.D. SALINGER? • Best known work: ‘The Catcher in the Rye’. (1951) • Born and grew up in the fashionable apartment in Manhatten, New York. • Salinger’s early short stories appeared in magazines: Story, Saturday Evening Post. • I like to write. I love to write. But I write just for myself and my own pleasure," said Salinger in 1974 to a New York Times correspondent.

  6. QUOTES Don't tell anybody... anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.

  7. "Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be.”

  8. I don't even know what I was running for - I guess I just felt like it.

  9. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS • Is Holden a strong character? • How can you explain the title?

  10. MY RESPONSE TO THE BOOK • Holden • Language • Relationship between Holden and Jane
