“Creating a Legacy That Will Stand for Generations” AΦA Beta Omicron Monument Nov. 7th, 2009
WHY A MONUMENT? • We remember that “manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind” are the aims of the Fraternity. • Beta Omicron has supplied that vision and voice for 75 years on Tennessee State University’s campus. • It is important that our memory is not just that of Alpha Phi Alpha , but that of Alpha Phi Alpha and Tennessee State University.
We know the struggle is not over. We must control and shape our memory on this campus. We must state our identity; not only for ourselves but also for those we need to inspire.
A monument serves as a witness. We need a physical presence to state that we have been here, that we are here, and that God willing we will always be here.
Excerpt from Bro. David Evans’ speech at the Oct. 10, 2008 BO Monument Groundbreaking So, I’m happy today that our founders were men who looked at the many victims of the Great Depression and the monumental miscarriage of justice in Scottsboro, Alabama, and resolved in their minds: “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Because of the character of those men, Beta Omicron has always strived to internalize and manifest the powerful words from the Alpha hymn: “…Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind…” Continue……
I am a better human being because I was one of those described in The House of Alpha: “…men unacquainted, enter, shake hands, exchange greetings, and depart friends…” Although the MESSAGE of “our dear Fraternity” is immortal, its MESSENGERS are mere mortals. Therefore, some of these messengers have gathered here today to break ground for a monument worthy of bearing that immortal message for all to see—now and for years to come. Thank you and God bless Beta Omicron, Alpha Phi Alpha, and all who “honor their precepts.” Bro. David Evans - 58Fa
