PROGRAM OBJECTIVES • The MSc and PhD programs in Health Sciences: • thesis-based graduate programs • for graduates performing research within any of the clinical departments in the College of Medicine or the School of Physical Therapy • research projects will primarily investigate translational and/or clinical aspects of human disease, health, healthy living, and/or translational research but may also include more biomedical research projects with clinical translation • Areas of research are open and dependent on the research interests and expertise of the student and their research supervisor • Will offer relevant, centrally managed, mandatory courses that will provide research skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for any life and health science graduate regardless of the nature of the research project.
RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAMS • Reasons for proposing the MSc & PhD programs in Health Sciences: • clinical departments over the years (Department of Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, School of Physical Therapy) have wanted to establish their own graduate program • The 2005 Systematic Program Review (SPR) of the clinical graduate programs, the College of Medicine noted significant deficiencies in existing graduate programs within Surgery, Pathology, and Psychiatry • Approach by the College of Medicine to address the issues: • develop new graduate programs that maximize financial & human resources and provide high quality programs • The College of Medicine Research Office will offer centrally-managed programs with relevant courses that are important to life and health science students • The Programs will provide a home for clinically-based research projects performed within clinical departments which presently fall within the “special case” category.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROGRAMS • The need in the health sector to bring best evidence-based practice to the daily clinical questions encountered by health professionals • The MSc and PhD programs in Health Sciences for graduate students within Clinical Departments & the School of Physical Therapy will be unique for Saskatchewan • The program committee has relied on the guidance of experts from across campus in the establishment and development of the programs and for the delivery of the core, mandatory courses within the programs • The management of the programs will be through the College of Medicine Research Office • assisting with the day to day management of the programs & students • development of the executive and program committees for the programs • assessment of the courses and overall programs.
COURSES • Graduate students with clinically-based research projects will takethe following mandatory courses: • Health Sciences 990.0 Seminar Course • Clinical Research Methodologies 800.3 Course • CHEP 805.3 Biostatistics I (if no statistical course taken previously) • Graduate students withbiomedical or community-based research projects will take the following mandatory courses: • Health Sciences 990.0 Seminar Course • Essentials for Conducting Life and Health Sciences Research 801.3 • CH&E 805.3 Biostatistics I (if no prior knowledge/expertise)
Course Outline CLR 800.3 Modules: 1. Research process and scientific method 2. Basic methods of information tracking and management – Health Sciences Library 3. Epidemiological Design for Health Science Research Projects 4. Quantitative Statistics for Clinical Research 5. Qualitative Methods for Clinical Research 6. N=1 studies: longitudinal analysis of individual patients 7. Clinical trials 8. Community-based research: Issues and concerns of community involvement in conducting research 9. Aboriginal/Indigenous research 10. Research Ethics 11. Communication Skills: common CV, poster presentations, writing skills for developing an abstract, research paper, guidelines of authorship 12. Quality improvement: techniques to assess and improve best clinical practices 13. Knowledge translation: What is it? Scope? Importance and relevance to researcher, sponsor, government, University
HUMAN, PHYSICAL & FINANCIAL RESOURCES • HUMAN/PHYSICAL RESOURCES • The physical resources needed to support the programs (library, lecture and tutorial rooms) have been identified and discussed with the administrative groups that will be affected and involved with the programs, for example: Facilities Management & the Health Sciences Library • The College of Medicine Research Office will: • manage the overall programs • assess the programs & mandatory courses • will establish the Executive Committee & Program Committees • FINANCIAL RESOURCES • The College of Medicine will hire a one-year term position to assist in the development of the programs and the implementation of the core courses.
