  3. Characteristics of PBL • Reliance on problems to drive the curriculum • Problems are ill-structured • Students solve the problems • Students are only given guidelines • Authentic, performance based assessment

  4. PBL develops students who can. . . • Clearly define a problem • Develop alternative hypotheses • Access, evaluate, and utilize data from a variety of sources • Alter hypotheses given new information • Develop clearly stated solutions to fit the problem

  5. Stages in PBL • Encountering and Defining the Problem • What do I know? What do I need to know? What resources can I access? • Accessing, Evaluating and Utilizing Info • How current is the resource? How credible? • Synthesis and Performance • Construct a solution • Reorganize information in new ways

  6. Problems in Implementation • Cultural change • Traditional model of teaching • Students must learn to be part of the group • Cannot rely on one member • Teachers must adjust • More preliminary work • Learn to facilitate rather than direct
