  1. Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Cars By 8th Grade Student

  2. How will hydrogen power replace fossil fuels? • Hydrogen will slowly take over from fossil fuels as the main source of power. It will do this because hydrogen is easier to obtain and it won’t pollute like fossil fuels.

  3. How will hydrogen replace fossil fuels(cont.) • It will also take over because it is cheaper to purchase and make. This will help it a lot in the long run to replace fossil fuels.

  4. How will hydrogen replace fossil fuels(cont.) • Hydrogen will also take over because fossil fuels will soon run out leaving us no choice but to switch. This is a huge reason for it to replace fossil fuels.

  5. How will reducing our oil imports change our relationship with the counties in the Middle East? • If we reduce our oil imports with other countries of the middle east then it will be good and bad for us. It will be good because we will save money but bad because it will give us a bad relationship with them. If that happens, then there is no telling what they might do.

  6. How will reducing our oil imports change our relationships with the countries of the Middle East?(Cont.) • Anther way that reducing our oil imports will effect our relationship is that they may take away any other important items that we buy from them because of this. Some of these might be, well, fossil fuels. This is because if hydrogen cars fail then they may not sell us anymore to get back at us.

  7. Where will we get and how will we make hydrogen? • We will get our hydrogen from the air seeing as how it is the most abundant element in the universe.

  8. Where will we get and how will we make hydrogen?(cont.) • We will also get hydrogen from water because hydrogen is the main component of water .

  9. Where will we get and how will we make hydrogen?(cont.) • We will make hydrogen by using the Hydro-Gen. The Hydro-Gen separates hydrogen gas from the natural hydrogen-oxygen mix in standard tap water which will result in us making hydrogen.

  10. Where will we get and how will we make hydrogen?(cont.) • Another way for us to make hydrogen is by sending electric waves through a liquid electrolyte comprised of water and Lye which causes the hydrogen molecules to separate from the oxygen molecules in the water. Also, this will give us hydrogen.

  11. What are the disadvantages of petroleum fuels used in cars? • There are many disadvantages to using petroleum. One is that by using petroleum, you are polluting the air and the earth. Most of this pollution comes from large paper mills and factories, but it also comes from cars and other machines that use it for energy.

  12. Disadvantages of petroleum(cont.) • Another disadvantage of petroleum is that there is not enough of it left. We will probably run out within the next 30-40 years. This means that we will either have to ride bikes and horses or switch to hydrogen power.

  13. Disadvantages of petroleum(cont.) • Also by using petroleum, we are discharging the soil and water and causing acid rain to fall. This also brings about the chances of horrible climate changes.

  14. How are fuel cells using hydrogen? • One way that fuel cells can use hydrogen is by taking the hydrogen and combining with oxygen to form water without combustion. This way it forms electricity or in other words, energy to run the car.

  15. How are fuelcells using hydrogen? (cont.) • Another way for a fuel cell to use hydrogen is that it they take the hydrogen and store it in a metal so it can hold more than in anything else. This way you can travel farther on a tank of hydrogen. These are just a few ways that fuel cells use hydrogen.

  16. Can a fuel cell take in water and put out hydrogen and oxygen? • In order for a car to take in water and put out hydrogen and oxygen, electricity must pass though the water molecule and split it apart into hydrogen and oxygen. It then uses the hydrogen in the water to make energy.

  17. 2H2 + O2 => 2H2O Can a fuel cell take in hydrogen and oxygen and put out water? • The net reaction fuel cell can take in hydrogen and oxygen and releases water. The equation used to do this is . It is able to do this by giving the hydrogen a positive and the oxygen a negative charge so the two will attract and form water.

  18. What would a hydrogen economy look like? • In a hydrogen economy, vehicles like cars and airplanes would use hydrogen fuel cells for power, rather than petroleum.

  19. What would a hydrogen economy look like?(cont.) • A hydrogen economy would look cleaner and be healthier for all people, plants, and animals.

  20. What would a hydrogen economy look like?(cont.) • If we had a hydrogen economy you wouldn’t see any smog tests for tractors and other things like that.

  21. What would a hydrogen economy look like?(cont.) • You also wouldn’t see as many problems with oil and other countries in the news anymore.

  22. Where are hydrogen cars being used today and what are other alternative fuels? • An alternative fuel would be coal. This is because coal is a very abundant resource.

  23. Where are hydrogen cars being used today and what are other alternative fuels?(cont.)

  24. Where are hydrogen cars being used today and what are other alternative fuels?(cont.)
