Getting Ready… • District Priority – High School EL Success • High School English Learner Accountability Work Groups with Dr. Norm Gold • VUSD EL Master Plan – Annual Expectations • Ventura County High School EL Task Force • Ventura County “Secondary School Leadership for English Learner Success” 5-day series with Dr. Laurie Olsen from Californians Together • Comprehensive district team formed and trained. Including: administrators, counselors, teachers, specialist, and consultant support • Action plan with prioritized tasks

Restructuring for success… • English Learner courses reviewed and revised based on student needs • English Learner course sequence rewritten for VUSD high schools • Specific placement criteria for all courses • Two periods of instruction for ELD courses • Selection of appropriate curriculum and technology • Professional development, teambuilding and ongoing support

Communication is essential • Keeping staff and community informed • Informing students – “Pep Talks” with AP’s • Board of Education presentation – High School Course Directory • Dinner meetings to build teams and collaborate – TEAMSSS • ELAC and DELAC meetings • Monthly Presentations at K-12 Principals’ Meetings • Monthly District English Learner Coordinating Council Meetings lead by Superintendent • “Making It Happen” bilingual brochures for students and parents

  6. Building Students’ Assets • Specialized Secondary Program Grant – Bilingual Opportunities Pathway Program • New Courses: Spanish for Careers in the Community and Spanish for International Careers • Multilingual Recognition Seal on High School Diplomas beginning in June, 2009

Maintaining Our Momentum • Multiple measures for careful student placement • Reclassification Celebrations • Year Two WRITE training for ELD/English teachers • WRITE support for content area teachers • SB472 Training for Edge • Middle School – Articulation and program revision • District support team meetings • Pep Talks for middle school students, 4th and 5th graders • District-wide grading committee to revise policy • PIQE series for high school parents • Focus on AYP success 10th graders
