Jeffery Reflects on the Effectiveness of a Leader’s Behaviors • Jeffery David Whippofeels that there are situations where leadership may not be necessary; however certain types of leader behaviors may provide some substitute for what we know as traditional leadership. • He articulates that while Neutralizers are defined as characteristics that may reduce or limit the effectiveness of a leader’s behaviors, Substitutes are characteristics that make a leader’s behaviors redundant or even unnecessary as penned by Kerr and Jermier. • He goes on to describe how Kerr and Jermier compared the correlations between specific leadership behaviors and follower performance and satisfaction with correlations between various situational factors and follower performance and satisfaction which led to the development of their idea of substitutes for leadership.

Jeffery Shares His Views on Formalization within Organizations • Jeffery feels that formalization within organizations may substitute for task-oriented leader behavior, and strict rules and procedures may even neutralize the leader’s task behavior. • He further says that tasks that are routine may also substitute for task-oriented leader behavior as well as tasks that provide a sense of intrinsic satisfaction to the followers. • According to him, teams or work groups exhibiting a high level of cohesiveness may in and of themselves provide to be a substitute for the leader’s task and relationship behavior.
