  2. Title: Tryouts Author: Darnell Parker Genre: Narrative Reading Goal: Clarifying words that are hard to understand. Team Cooperation Goal: Active Listening Essential Question: How can we clarify a word we don’t know or understand?

  3. Clarify • Figure out how to pronounce (say) a word or a word’s meaning (definition) by using strategies.

  4. knack • Special talent • My pets have a knack for circus tricks.

  5. replied • Answered, responded • Mario replied to Luigi’s phone call.

  6. pitch • Throw • The coach asked Reyna to pitch for the championship game.

  7. exclaimed • Said loudly, shouted • The Queen bee exclaimed, “It is time to make some honey!”

  8. nervous • Worried, uneasy • Mr. Worry was nervous about going to the dentist.

  9. extended • Stretched Maria extended her arm to Lynn so she could win the race.

  12. What does it mean to clarify? • Figure out how to say a word or a word’s meaning by using strategies.

  13. Let’s try clarifying the underlined word Sentence #1 We knew a juffer was coming because the clouds were getting darker and the wind was blowing more strongly. Sentence #2 The meteorologist predicted that we would have a strong winds and possible flooding on Saturday.

  14. Now you try: Clarify the underlined words Daniel wanted to pick some flowers from his garden to make a bouquet for his mother. He picked some tall sunflowers and some purple primulas. He thought irises would look nice, so he clipped some of those, too. Daniel went inside and put all the flowers in a vase.
