OPPORTUNITY: FLORIDA AHEC NETWORK PRODUCTS • The Internet: A Guide to Working Smarter • AHECPortal • FADL –Florida AHEC Digital Library
AHEC PRODUCTS • Had been developed • People did not know about them even though they were distributed statewide • The resources were not intuitive to use • Effective use required training Not everything on the Internet is correct or easy to locate
TRAINING ONLINE RESOURCES FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS Approved for CME CEU’s 1 hour
LEARNER OBJECTIVES • Construct effective search strategies • Demonstrate the ability to use keyword and Boolean search strategies • Locate clinically relevant health resources using the Internet and AHECPortal • Find clinically relevant articles in the medical literature utilizing the Florida AHEC Digital Library (FADL) • State how to use Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) principles in online search strategies • Evaluate Web-based health resources

OPPORTUNITY National Library of Medicine Funding • Desire to train public health workers on use of Internet (Healthy People 2010) • Grant program provides funding NNLM Information Access Grant - 2001 $50,000 awarded to UF HSC Libraries and North Florida AHEC program
TRAINING • Two sessions developed • Searching for Medical Information through the National Library of Medicine (2 hours) • Locating Public Health Resources Using the CDC and other Internet Websites
LEARNER OBJECTIVES • Name at least two Internet search engines • Name and give examples of three criteria used to evaluate websites • Identify useful Internet sites for Public Health • Find grant writing resources, practice guidelines and evidence based medicine resources on the web • Locate and use search engines and databases • Locate free full-text medical journals and books on the web • Search for clinical medical information in PubMed • Search for consumer health information in MedlinePlus
AUDIENCE • Public health professionals working in the 14 counties of Big Bend AHEC • Training was provided to West Florida and Northeast Florida AHEC counties when the grant period was extended to 2003.
VENUES • County Health Departments • Department of Health • Community computer training facilities to allow hands-on practice
FORMAT • Combination of power point presentations with live Internet connection and hands-on search training • CME and CE credits for social work and nursing were obtained • The audience provided topics used to demonstrate the search processes
MARKETING • Big Bend AHEC scheduled sessions at health departments and the Department of Health • Participants were given information about Florida AHEC Network products: • The Internet Guide • AHECPortal • Websites for free medical journals and books (pre-FADL) • NLM databases – PubMed and MedlinePlus
OPPORTUNITY:SCHOOLHEALTH • Big Bend and Suwannee River AHEC identified need from School Nurse participation in CHD training • Presented as part of AHEC-sponsored School Health Nurse Conferences Fall 2003/January 2004 in: • Suwannee River • Big Bend • Northeast Florida • One-hour session on Internet Resources for School Health.
LEARNER OBJECTIVES • Identify and search the Internet using major search engines • Construct valid search statements • Identify Internet resources for school health • Evaluate web sites for: • Accuracy, Authority, Objectivity, Currency and Coverage • Introduce the FSNP website
VENUES • Hotel conference facilities • County Health Departments • Local schools • Community board rooms • One or two-hour session dependent on location
FORMAT • Combination of power point presentations with a live Internet connection and hands-on training • Nursing CE credits were provided • Funding for travel from UFAHEC program
OPPORTUNITY • Florida Public Health Association Joint Annual Meeting Internet Café • Barbara Richardson was FPHA President • NN/LM Southeastern/Atlantic (SE/A) State or Regional Exhibiting subcontract • $2,000 for each professional meeting

AUDIENCE • FPHA, FEHA and FPHN attendees • Nurses, physicians and environmental health professionals • County Health Department Directors • Students and faculty in MPH programs • DOH employees • EH professionals do not know about use of Internet resources
FORMAT • Internet Café • 4 computers with Internet connectivity • Check email • Send documents (grant submissions) • Attend a training session • Individual instruction with a librarian • Presenters could test their slides • Trainings were a combination of power point presentations and live Internet connection

MARKETING Participants were given information about Florida AHEC Network products: • The Internet: A Guide to Working Smarter • AHECPortal • FADL • Health Career Guide Copies items were on display in the training room.
FUTURE POSSIBILITIES • Statewide professional meetings exhibits and hands on training. • FEHA is interested in hands-on training • Health Occupations • Resources for Teachers and students • Partnering with Public libraries on Health literacy and consumer health topics • Senior centers and retirement communities • Focus on resources for special populations resources like Hispanic, Indian resources
