STC NEXT GENERATIONLEARNING CHALLENGESLearner Web/Directed Self Placement (DSP) • Students with higher developmental scores self-place in either • a developmental class • ENGL 1301 with web-based diagnostics and remediation • ENGL 1301 without web-based support.
DIRECTED SELF-PLACEMENT + (DSP+) PROCESS DSP+ Students • The reality: • Students did not engage with mentors, tutors, and the learning web at the level that the leadership of the grant had intended. • Students who chose ENGL1301 with DSP support did not take advantage of the Learner Web Assigned faculty mentor (2 Developmental ENGL faculty) Faculty mentors monitor student progress in DSP+ Refer to DSP+ tutors when necessary
Directed Self Placement DATA Students skipped Developmental and succeeded in ENGL1301

The Puente Framework There are four essential components: • 1. An accelerated writing course that incorporates Latino, Mexican/American, and other multicultural authors, experience and issues, through which students progress in one year to transfer level English composition. • 2. Counseling that provides students with sustained, in-depth, career and academic guidance throughout their enrollment at the community college • 3. Mentoring by members of the professional community, who serve as role models and support for the students’ work and progress. • 4. Professional Development is at the core of the model.
The N.A.D.E.’s motto: Helping underprepared students prepare, prepared students advance, and advanced students excel.
