PURPOSE • Thepurpose of thisstudywastocomparetheoutcomes of amniotic-membranetransplantationandlimbal-conjunctivalautograft (LCAG) fortreatment of recurrentpterygia.
MATERIAL AND METHOD • Therecords of 50 eyeswithrecurrentptergiaeitherunderwentamniotic-membranetransplantationor LCAG wereretrospectivelyevaluated. Inbothgroupsthepterygiumheadwasdetachedand body wasdissectedfromtheoverlyingconjunctiva. Subconjunctivalpterygialtissuewasexcised. Thearea of baresclerawaseithercoveredwith a limbal-conjunctivalautograftorwithamnioticmembrane. Amnioticmembranewasexcisedfivedaysafterthesurgery. Twogroupswerecompared in terms of recurrence (defined as fibrovasculartissueinvadingthecornea >1.5 mm) andcomplications.
RESULTS • Twenty-sixeyeswereincluded in theamniongroupand 24 in the LCAG group. Recurrenceoccurred in no eye in theamniongroupand in oneeye in the LCAG group (P=0.480). Incidence of complicationssuch as conjunctivalhyperemia (10 eyes in amnion 12 eyes in LCAG), subconjunctivalhemorrhage (4 eyes in amnion, 7 eyes in LCAG), cornealepithelialdefects (1 eye in amnion 2 eyes in LCAG), irritation, lacrimation, andphotophobia (2 eyes in amnion 4 eyes in LCAG) wassimilar in bothgroups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSION • Amniotic-membranetransplantationandlimbal-conjunctivalautograftaresimilarlysuccessfulmodalities in thetreatment of recurrentpterygia. Theincidence of complicationsobservedafterbothsurgicaltechniquearesimilar.
