  1. Industrial Skills Personal Safety & Accident Prevention

  2. Accident Prevention Education Training Personal Awareness Accident Mitigation Procedures Safety Equipment Proper Tools Accident: A sudden, unplanned event which has the potential for producing injury or damage. Safety experts concentrate their efforts in two general areas:

  3. Individuals must continually recognize the four factors that play a major role in the safe performance of an activity: • The difficulty of the activity. • The ability level required. • Expertise • Physical limitations. • The immediate state of the technician. • Physiological • Psychological • The condition of the environment.

  4. 100 million workers in the U.S. • 3.2 million suffer occupational injuries each year – Emergency Room. • One on-the-job accidental death in the U.S. every 40 minutes. • 300 on-the-job injuries every minute. Negligence is a major cause of industrial accidents!

  5. Keys to Accident Prevention: • Think about what you are doing! • Pay attention to signs, labels & tags. • Wear the right PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). • Read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for each “material” you use. • Practice good housekeeping. • Use proper lifting techniques.

  6. Major Causes of Accidents: • Carelessness • Recklessness • Fatigue • Stress • Overexertion

  7. Test Yourself: • See if you can spot what may be an unsafe activity in the following images. • Can you tell us why?

  8. The image shown below poses a risk of damage and/or personal injury because: Nobody is wearing a hard hat. Improper lifting techniques are being used. By not fully understanding the difficulty of the activity, these men may not be able to recognize and evaluate the hazards involved.

  9. The image shown below poses a risk of damage and/or personal injury because: Nobody is wearing personal protective gear. These men are attempting a skill beyond their ability. The immediate state of the “performer” is significantly affecting their ability to perform certain tasks.

  10. The image shown below poses a risk of damage and/or personal injury because: Several of the technicians face a risk of heat exhaustion. These men are attempting a skill beyond their ability. Man-made environmental hazards and/or lack of personal protective gear may play a role in the safe performance of this activity.

  11. The image shown below poses a risk of damage and/or personal injury because: This man is not wearing a hard hat. This man probably did not get enough sleep last night. Inadequate knowledge may have led to a failure to recognize and evaluate the hazards involved. His safety goggles are fogging up due to the high humidity.

  12. The image shown below poses a risk of damage and/or personal injury because: This man is not wearing safety gloves. This man probably did not read the warning label on this light fixture. Inadequate knowledge may have led to a failure to recognize and evaluate the hazards involved. The condition of the environment in which this activity is being performed may include unsafe machinery.

  13. The damage shown in the image below could be the result of: Insufficient skill or attempting a skill beyond one’s ability. The physiological effects of substance abuse and/or lack of sleep. Careless operation of a motor vehicle. Unsafe machinery.

  14. The damage shown in the image below could be the result of: Insufficient skill or attempting a skill beyond one’s ability. The physiological effects of substance abuse and/or lack of sleep. Careless operation of a motor vessel. Reckless operation of a motor vessel.

  15. The damage shown in the image below could be the result of: Poor housekeeping skills. Man-made environmental hazards. Careless operation of a motor vehicle. Unsafe machinery. The physical limitations of the equipment operator. (ie. Hearing, vision, reaction time, etc.)

  16. Natural environmental factors may affect a person’s ability to safely perform a variety of routine tasks. True False

  17. THINK SAFETY!

  18. Because we never know when the Buck will stop with us!
