Fusion Power Associates Annual Meeting and Symposium September 27-28, 2006 PRESENTATION OF AWARDS Stephen O. Dean, President Fusion Power Associates
2006 LEADERSHIP AWARDS • Fusion Power Associates Leadership Awards were established in 1980 to recognize individuals who have provided outstanding leadership in accelerating the development of fusion power. • The 2006 Leadership Awards are presented to Gerald Navratil and Ned Sauthoff
GERALD NAVRATIL In selecting Dr. Navratil, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many outstanding scientific contributions to fusion research and his community leadership. They especially note his role in founding and continuing to guide the University Fusion Association (UFA), his roles in organizing the fusion Snowmass meetings and the series of UFA-sponsored burning plasma workshops, his role in advocating burning plasma physics within the framework of the National Academies, and his role in defending a broad-based domestic fusion research program.
NED SAUTHOFF In selecting Dr. Sauthoff, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many outstanding scientific contributions to fusion research and his community leadership. They especially note his many scientific contributions to tokamak research, his role in guiding energy and education policy within the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the role he is playing in leading preparations for United States participation in the ITER project.
2006 EXCELLENCE IN FUSION ENGINEERING AWARD Fusion Power Associates Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards, in memory of MIT Professor David J. Rose, were established in 1987 to recognize persons in the relatively early part of their careers who have shown both technical accomplishment and potential to become exceptionally influential leaders in the fusion field. The 2006 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Award is presented to Dr. Yutai Katoh of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
YUTAI KATOH In selecting Dr. Katoh, the Fusion Power Associates Board of Directors recognizes his many outstanding scientific contributions and especially his leadership role in the development of new, attractive silicon carbide composites for potential use in fusion power plants of the future.
DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD Fusion Power Associates Distinguished Career Awards were established in 1987 to recognize individuals who have made distinguished lifelong career contributions to fusion development The 2006 Award was presented earlier this year to Dr. N. Anne Davies In presenting the Award to Dr. Davies, FPA President Steve Dean said, “Ever since your arrival in the fusion office in 1974, you have shown extraordinary ability to assess and balance the many conflicting opinions and priorities of the fusion community. Since assuming leadership of the program as a whole in 1989, you have guided the U. S. fusion community through a series of budget and policy crises, and eventually to the point where the U. S. is once more moving forward toward the construction of a new major fusion test facility, ITER.”
