System Request • Project Sponsor : Ms. Tita Restrepo • Head Librarian, Old Town Library • Phone : 281-555-5550 • Fax: 281-555-5555 • Email : trestrepo@oldtown.gov
Business Model & Background • Originally a family owned library in 1988 it was opened to the public. • By 1999 the library was very well known and was taken over by the city. • The library has grown to over 50,000 books, each book has been categorized and labeled using the Dewey Decimal system. • Even though owned by the city, all transactions are still recorded “Old Fashion Way”. • The library was recently remodeled, after it grossed over $450,000 in memberships and donations.
Business Need • New categorized system for the new generation. • Develop an online inventory of e-books. • Need all past data transferred to new recording system which is more efficient and trustworthy. • Develop a network “card catalog” initially with 3 computers for public use to look up a book and find it easily in the library. • Acquire a larger variety of books.
Business Requirements • Search for books from the main computer by author, title, publisher, or key words. • Access overdue lists and charges. • Access member information, name, home address, home number or cell phone. • Access members who have books that are overdue and those who’s due date is coming up. • Access list of books that are damaged. • Access most popular books by title, author, or key words.
Business Value(Tangible) • Increase inventory by 35% from 50,000 to 67,500. • Reduce all overtime by instituting an online catalog. • Increase in computer hardware due to electronic card catalog. • Cut down on time spent on inventory by 60%
Business Value(Intangible) • Increase in customer service by instituting quick electronic search. • E-Books will allow customers to check out books online in the convenience of their home at all times of the day. • While having the e-books up and running, there will still be classic books to be checked out at the library. • Employees will have more knowledge at hand about the book location in the library. • Tracking of all books will be made simple due to the automated system.
Special Interests & Constraints • Training schedules will be needed so that all employees learn the new system and yet there is still someone in the customer service desk at all times to answer inquiries. • Checking out books online MAY decrease the “at location” traffic by possibly 10%. • One employee should be trained in the tech department in case of technical difficulties.
