Population size varies. • Optimum conditions – estimated 4 trillion in Mono Lake, CA • Eggs can dry out in the desert and stay viable for a year or longer. • When the conditions fall in their range of tolerance they hatch. • They hatch only when the environmental conditions are such that they can live!
