  2. Do now….. • For class today you will need your binder (which SHOULD include pieces of paper), something to write with (make sure your pencil is sharp & ready to go) and your Adapted Interactive Reader. • Please get these things NOW, quickly & quietly. Thank you, please.

  4. Vocabulary in Context • Humble is an adjective that means modest, low in rank, or courteously respectful. → The family lived in a humble cottage by the woods.

  5. Vocabulary in Context • Husk is a noun that means the dry covering of certain fruits and seeds, especially corn. → Tamales are wrapped in husks, the stiff coverings from ears of corn.

  6. Vocabulary in Context • Stagger is a verb that means to walk or move unsteadily. The past tense is staggered. →The toddler staggered as he took his first steps, so his mother used her hands to steady him.

  7. Vocabulary in Context • Write a short paragraph using the 3 vocabulary words we just learned. You may write about any topic that you wish. • When you finish, exchange paragraphs with your partner. Your partner should read, underline the vocabulary words and check that the words are used correctly.

  8. Warm-up • Yesterday we began talking about the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and we watched a brief video trailer. • Think back to the video. How to you think Douglass might have reacted emotionally to slavery. Be ready to share your response.

Frederick Douglass – Say Something! • With your partner, decide who will say something first. • When you say something, do one or more of the following: Identify an unfamiliar word Make a prediction Ask a question Make a connection Make a comment • If you cannot do one of the above, you need to re-read. • The other person responds to what was said. Be ready to share!

Comprehension Questions • What kind of work does Douglass do for Mr. Covey? • How long did Douglass live with Covey? • What does Covey use as the excuse for whipping Douglass? • What is Master Thomas’s reaction when Douglass tells him about his life with Covey? • What does a slave give Douglass for protection against Covey?

  18. Frederick Douglass - Writing • Please take out a separate piece of paper. • You will write two paragraphs about what happened when Douglass fled home to Master Thomas (in you OWN words). Consider the following questions: • Why does Douglass expect Master Thomas to protect him? • Why does Master Thomas want Douglass to stay with Covey? • Why do you think Master Thomas says Mr. Covey is a good man?
