Teacher: ShahnaazAlidhina Quran Research Project By: AlimaHasham
Topic Chosen: • TOPIC: The pleasures of seeking Knowledge (Spiritually) • REASON FOR THIS SELECTION: • It is always recommended to seek knowledge whether it be through attending school, or by doing tafseer, or any other means • Being a young person, knowledge is a key to many things I do in my daily life and is a necessity
Background Knowledge • It is emphasized in Islam to gain knowledge in many shapes and forms • Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. always encouraged learning • A Hadith states: Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave” • Imam Jaffer-As-Sadiq and Imam Muhammad-e-Baqir were the ones who brought about universities as well as science and mathematics
What I would like to know from this research? • To understand the vital role of knowledge and its importance within a Muslim’s life • To view the Quran’s perspective of knowledge and the reason as to why it is emphasized • To realize the spiritual benefits, when one acqurires knowledge, and how one’s status may increase because of it
Search for Ayats • Increase in status: 39:9 (SurahZumar, Ayat #9) 58:11 (SurahMujadilah, Ayat#11) • Reason of emphasis/Spiritual Benefit 96:1-5 (Surah Al-Alaq, Ayat#1-5) 22:46 (Surah Al-Hajj, Ayat #46) `
SurahZumar, Ayat #9 قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ۗ إِنَّمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ﴿٩﴾ “…Say-Are those equal; those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endowed with understanding that receive admonition.” (39:9)
SurahZumar, Ayat #9- Explination • Proves that there is a spiritual difference between people who have knowledge and those who do not -For one to be differentiated as one who is knowledgeable, one has to first acquire the knowledge and this will lead him/her to gain such a status in Allah’s eyes. • States that those who have understanding will receive admonition (advice) from Allah which can help in one’s daily life and situations as well as in preparing for the next world.
SurahMujadilah , Ayat #11 وَإِذَا قِيلَ انشُزُوا فَانشُزُوا يَرْفَعِ اللَّـهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ ۚ وَاللَّـهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِير ﴿١١﴾ ٌ “…Allah will raise up, to (suitable) ranks (and degrees), those of you who believe and have been granted knowledge. And Allah is well-acquainted with all you do.” (58:11)
SurahMujadilah , Ayat #11-Explination • It is proven in this verse that we will be raised according to our belief and the knowledge we have. This shows the immense importance of knowledge in a Mumin’s life because their ranking will be in relation to this. -Here we can see that faith and knowledge are put together which means that one needs to have both in order to excel as a Muslim -We also see that one has to be worthy of being granted knowledge which only comes from Allah. This can be done by striving to be a good muslim. • The verse ends off by saying “Allah is well-acquainted with all we do,” which shows that he is aware of our efforts when we strive to gain knowledge as well as how we use this knowledge to make ourselves better Muslims and to please Allah (eg. Earning a livelihood (through a career that requires education) to feed our families and to help the poor, give sadqah through this livelihood we earn.)
SurahAlaq , Ayats #1-5 “Read (O Muhammad) in the name of your Lord who created (all things). (96:1) “ He created men from a clot.” (96:2) “Recite (O Muhammad) Your Lord is most honourable,” (96:3) “Who taught to write with a pen,” (96:4) “Who taught man what he did not know.” (96:5)
SurahAlaq , Ayats #1-5-Explination • Although these ayats refer to the Prophet, there is a message for mankind as well. Allah is telling the Prophet to read and recite by His name as well as He taught men how to write with a pen and what they did not know. • Relation between all five ayats: Allah states that he created men from a clot and then how we were given knowledge from Him and taught by Him how to write . This shows that although we were created from a such a small insignificant thing(clot), we have the potential to become learned beings through the wisdom, spirit and guidance received from Allah. From this, it is possible to reach among those who have the highest of intellect. • It also shows that we need to read and write through which we can gain knowledge and display as well as explain Allah’s message.
Surah Hajj , Ayat #46 فَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَتَكُونَ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَا أَوْ آذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا ۖ “Do they not travel in the land so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear?...(22:46)
Surah Hajj , Ayat #46- Explination • This ayat brings about the reality that knowledge can raise to level to which wisdom can come about. Wisdom is something very powerful that is granted by Allah to those who are worthy. In order for one to be among those people, knowledge is the source through which it can be attained • Another important point is that we as people are living in lands through which we can acquire knowledge and we can use this knowledge we gain to differentiate between the truth (Allah and his message) and what we “hear”.
Hadiths/Sayings • The Prophet (S.A.W.) has said:“A man shall be asked concerning five things on the day of resurrection: concerning his life, how he spent it; concerning his youth, how he grew old; concerning his wealth, whence he acquired it, and in what way he spent it; and what was it that he did with the knowledge that he had.” • Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) had said: “Seeking of knowledge is incumbent upon every Muslim...” • Imam Jaffer as Sadiq has said: “The ink a scholar uses to write is superior to the blood of a martyr.”
What the topic taught me: • The knowledge we gain is not only for intellecutal power and to apply reason, but it is also meant to be used in spiritual awareness and to spread as well as explain his message otherwise it is not being used in its full capacity. We have been bestowed with knowledge to make use of it the right way and in all occasions. • To continue as much as possible when it comes to acquiring knowledge whether it be religious knowledge or other types of knowledge (science, mathematics, etc.) • All the knowledge one gains is from Allah and we should thank him daily for giving us our intellect and the potential to be among the most knowledgeable of people
In conclusion: رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا ﴿١١٤﴾ “Oh my Lord, Increase my Knowledge..” (20:114) This is a short dua that is to be recited daily, and is a prayer to Allah to increase one’s knowledge in everything and anything he or she does.
