General Philosophy “Every Child Achieves” • Meet every child’s needs, differentiated instruction across the curriculum by having groups for reading and writing and math centers. • Children work individually, in small groups and as a whole class • Our curriculum is based on subject-area standards vertically aligned from grade to grade.

  4. Literacy By Design Reading ProgramLBD • It is a comprehensive K-3 program to ensure a strong transition for Early Childhood students coming to first grade, and fits perfectly to ensure a smooth transition for grade three students moving to the Reader’s Workshop model in grade four. • Students will be applying skills learned to books at their instructional level guaranteeing all students are challenged yet engaged.

  5. Literacy By Design Reading ProgramLBD • This program is firmly planted upon research and filled with best practices. Strong digital components directly linked to ThinkCentral. • LBD is based on the nine instructional strategies highlighted through the work of Robert Marzano. • Includes the five fundamental elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Writing Writer’s Workshop • Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop: Small Moments-Personal Narrative, Realistic Fiction, Procedural Writing, Opinion Writing, Authors, Informational/Non-Fiction Writing and Poetry • Presentation and Handwriting Spelling and Handwriting • Words Their Way Spelling program. • No Excuse Words • D’Nealian Handwriting

First Grade Secure Skills Numeration and Operation • Counts to 130 • Larger/Smaller(3 digit number) • Add/subtract with 10 and multiples of 10 • Read/write 3 digit numbers • Complete missing numbers in a sequence • Before/after number concepts Geometry • Recognizes and names basic polygons Patterns/Functions • Telling time to the hour and ½ hour • Uses tally marks • Writes telephone number Measurement • Order Objects by weight • Draws length measurement

  10. Homework • Homework should take no more than 30 minutes, this includes all subjects. • Use a pencil to do homework. • Always color the pictures. • Read with or to your child every night. Make sure and sign the Homework Sheet and include the title of the book read every day. • Math homework will go home on a daily basis in the regular homework folder. • Spanish homework goes home once a week.

Snack(Classroom M-T-Th-F 10:15-10:25 W 9:45-9:55) Lunch(CafeteriaM-T-Th-F 12:15-12:35W 12:00-12:20) • We have three designated tables for 1st grade in the cafeteria. 1A-1B-1C • Students are responsible for using the microwave to warm up their food at lunch time. • Students are responsible for picking up after themselves at snack time and at lunch time. • Make sure your child has a healthy snack and a healthy lunch every day and plenty of liquids. • Parents are welcome to come and have lunch with their child once a month or on a special occasions but please sit at another table because our tables are not that big enough for children and adults. • Birthdays • Birthday Celebrations can only take place during snack or lunch time.

  15. Tardiness/Attendance • School starts at 8:15 A.M. and ends at 3:30. Except on Wednesday when dismissal is at 2:00 • Arrival after the National Anthem at 8:30 is considered a tardy. • Please let us know in writing of any changes in transportation or if your child is being picked up early on a specific school day.
