  1. A380 Wake Vortex Project ICAO Air Navigation Commission 18 November 2005

  2. Objective • To recommend the wake vortex separation for A380 in respect of: • Arrival • Departure • Vertical • Horizontal • In trail (climbing/descending)

  3. Background • VLTA Conference 1998 • Dedicated working group led by ICAO concluded that special emphasis needed for VLTA wake vortex issues • JAA Airworthiness Division preferred Ops Division to address this issue since there were no existing certification provisions / requirements • FAA also considering wake vortex issues as encouraged by NTSB recommendation A94.056 • July 2003 JAA set up steering group, co-chaired with EUROCONTROL and participants FAA and AIRBUS, with ICAO as observer. The group reports to JAA & EUROCONTROL

  4. Over-arching principle • No prior established scientific basis for establishing separation criteria • Assumption – existing separation criteria acceptably safe • Compare – A380 vs B747 & A340

  5. Safety Assessment • To satisfy EUROCONTROL and JAA programme requirements, an independent safety case has been formulated by DNV (DET NORSKE VERITAS)under contract. • This safety case will provide evidence that wake vortex separation criteria for the A380 are acceptably safe. • Evidence will be based on: • Hazard assessment • Modeling/ Measurements • Validation of processes & methods • In-service monitoring

  6. Strategy ARRIVAL  LIDAR + transport & decay model DEPARTURE  LIDAR + transport & decay model VERTICAL  LIDAR + transport & decay model envisaged + Flight tests HORIZONTAL Transport & decay model IN TRAIL  LIDAR + Transport & decay model + flight test

  7. Interim Guidance • Needed for A380 proving flights • Based on initial analysis of data • APA, LIDAR • 2 State Letters issued by ICAO • Valid until final guidance issued

  8. Planned Work Program • Final report completed by SG by Q2 2006 • Executive Summary • WG Report • Safety Case Will include - Precise outcome of analysis - Recommended criteria to be applied operationally Sign off by EUROCONTROL, JAA, AIRBUS, FAA and delivered to ICAO
