Device Design We built our device out of wood and car track. PVC was also used for the rope to go around like a pulley. A little remote control car goes along the top and runs into a balloon and there is a free weight at the end of the rope that’s attached to the balloon. At the end a flag is raised.
Summary of Operation Our Device contains several ramps that a ball travels down. It falls into a cup and pulls a string that pulls the trigger of the remote control for the car. The car moves toward the balloon and pops it and that releases a weight that opens a clamp The opening of the clamp releases the string that holds the banner down so the banner is released
Calculations • We used the conservation of energy equation to find the speed at which the weight would hit the clamp: • mgh= ½ mv^2 • m = mass of the weight • g = gravity • h = Initial height • v = final velocity
Calculations (continued) • Torque (rotational motion): To calculate the number of revolutions the remote control car’s tires would turn before popping the balloon. T=(r)(F)(sin(theta)) • Conservation of linear momentum: To calculate the amount momentum the weight had when it hit the clamp. F=(d/dt)(mv)
Conclusion • We had minor difficulties coming up with ideas at the beginning but in the end we accomplished everything we set out to from the beginning. • We had 2 people.
