  2. From the beginning of the written word, books have had the capacity to enlighten, to instruct, to entertain and to offend, sometimes all within the same text. Books are frequently banned, generally on a local level affecting only local or school libraries. Occasionally, a government will step in to ban a book. It is not illegal to read banned books, the rulings just make them more difficult to find.

  3. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the most banned books in the U.S.It has been censored repeatedly since it’s publication in 1885.Huck Finn has been challenged in the recent years for the use of the “N” word because of it’s racial content.

  9. “ I don’t believe that a public school has the right to force an African-American student to read a text that denigrates African Americans,” Montoya said. “I don’t believe books should be banned but I don’t believe students should be forced to read them.”

  10. The appeals court said a student’s constitutional rights are violated when a book that has educational value, as determined by the school district, is removed from a required-reading list by threat of lawsuit.

"It tells us more about what American culture is and the rails on which it moves and the language — both overt and covert — that it uses to arrange reality than other books of its time," he said. "And that's why we still teach it. It still works. It still pushes the right buttons. That's why we still have to keep teaching it."

  17. Huck Finn was initially criticized for its rowdiness and later for what some consider a sympathetic view toward slaves.

  18. Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was No. 5 on the American Library Association's list of the 100 most challenged books of the 1990s.

  19. U.S. District Judge Stephen McNamee dismissed the suit in January 1997, saying he was aware that the language in the books was offensive and hurtful to Paton but did not find their assignment discriminatory.
