  1. CHRISTMAS Какова истинная цель Рождества? What is the true purpose of Christmas?

  3. Christmas is the most important festival in the US and in the UK, and takes place on and around December 25th. Although it is a Christian holiday, when the birth of Jesus is celebrated, people who are not Christian also celebrate Christmas as an occasion to give presents and spend time with their families.

  4. Christmas cards People send Christmas cards to their friends in order to say Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas. Christmas cards usually have pictures relating to Christmas traditions and winter, such as Christmas trees, holly, snowmen, and Santa Claus. Cards with religious messages usually show pictures of the Nativity (=the birth of Christ)

  5. Christmas carols During the Christmas period there are many performances of Carols (=special religious Christmas songs). They are sung in church as part of a religious ceremony, and schools have special concerts in which their students sing carols. People sometimes go carol singing or go caroling, which means they sing carols outside in a large group, especially outside people’s houses, and collect money for Charity (=money given to help people who are poor, sick etc)

  6. Christmas decorations(1) Many people decorate their homes for Christmas. Most people buy a Christmas tree, which they put small lights and decorations on. Some people also buy plants with bright red leaves called Poinsettias, and hang branches of Mistletoe above their doors. There is a tradition that if you are under the mistletoe with someone else, you have to kiss them.

  7. Christmas decorations(2) In the UK, people hang shiny, brightly coloured decorations made of paper from the ceiling or along the walls inside their homes. Some people both in the UK and in the US put small lights along the edges of their windows, the roof, and the main door of their houses. And many people decorate their front doors with a Wreath (=a circle made of green leaves)

  8. Christmas parties In the UK most offices have Christmas party. The stereotype of the office party is an event where everyone drinks too much and people say things to their boss that they would never say at any other time.

  9. Christmas food People usually eat more food and drink more alcohol at Christmas than at other times of the year. In the US, people eat Christmas cookies, special cookies that are baked at home. Traditional British food includes Christmas cake and Mince pies.

  10. Christmas Eve – December 24th The day before Christmas is known as Christmas Eve. Some people go to church to a special service called Midnight Mass or Christmas Eve service. Other people have a drink with their friends. Children get very excited on Christmas Eve because they believe that Santa Claus will come down the Chimney of their house in the night and put presents in the Christmas Stockings (=a special bag shaped like a large sock) at the end of their bed or on the Mantelpiece. They leave up glass of cherry (=a type of strong wine) and a mince pie, a small sweet pie filled with raisins, apples and spices, for Santa.

  11. Christmas Day – December 25th Christmas Day is a public holiday and people spend the day with their families. They open their presents and then have a special meal called Christmas Dinner. This is typically turkey with potatoes and other vegetables, usually carrots and sprouts. In the UK, this followed by Christmas Pudding. At the start of the meal, British people usually pull a Christmas Cracker (=brightly coloured paper tube that makes a small explosion when you pull it apart, and that contains a small toy, a paper hat, and a joke)

  12. Christmas Day – December 25th Working on the project we have known more about Christmas and celebrating this holiday. We have known a lot about Christmas shopping, Christmas cards and carols. The true purpose of Christmas is gathering together with our relatives, giving them our warmth and love as a gift But however we should remember that there are a lot of other holidays in the UK which aren’t less interesting!
