Protons, Neutrons & Electrons • Protons are positively charged particles in the nucleus. The number of protons decides what kind of element an atom is.
Neutrons • Neutrons are in the nucleus with protons. They are the heaviest particle in an atom. They have no charge.
Electrons • Electrons go around the nucleus. They are constantly moving and make a cloud around the nucleus. They are negatively charged particles.
Cool facts: Two atoms can share electrons. This is called a covalent bond. Atoms can also give away and receive electrons to form Ionic bonds. We call bonded atoms molecules and compounds.
