  2. Greece Ministry of Agriculture KAFE Department The Ministry is aligned behind full implementation of the Directive. This means that should egg-producers have not proceeded with change starting 1/1/2012, they lose their trade code and therefore not be able to sell their eggs on the market. The KAFE is the monitoring body of the Ministry responsible for incurring penalties should the egg producers refuse to abide by the Directive. The Ministry action plan involves: • An initial letter sent out at the beginning of 2011 reminding egg-producers that the directive is to be implemented as of 1/1/2012 • A follow up letter by the Junior Minister (3/2011) to egg-producers urging them for immediate change • A final letter planned to be sent out December 2011

  3. Greek Egg Industry • 400 egg farms all over the country. • The majority have an average size of 10-50.000 hens. • Medium sized farms have made no change or marginal changes in their facilities (estimated up to 5%) • The 6 leading egg farms count around 100.000 hens each or more. 2 of them (Zouras & ChrysaAvga) will have changed the vast majority of their cages by early or mid 2012. Vlachakis, will have no cages at all. • The remaining three, Iliadis, Avgodiatrofiki and Missas have not replied to our enquiries. • Level of compliance is expected to be low.

  4. Greece has the lowest consumption of eggs per capita in Europe Source: IEC

  5. What has GAWF done so far… • Regular meetings with Ministry/KAFE (every two months), lobbying for the Big Move. The Ministry has committed to provide full support and cooperation • Organised the Polish Embassy Demo • Sent out 2.500 Easter cards to the EU • Identified list of main egg producers in order to employ a ‘pressure strategy’ i.e. monthly contacts to obtain update on whether they are proceeding with changes • Created a column in our monthly newsletter updating GAWF audience on Campaign progress. Egg producers that are moving in the right direction are praised and shall be endorsed as of 2012 • Circulated press releases to media to inform consumers • Released in 2008 a leaflet on egg production targeting consumers through vet offices (funded by Compassion)

  8. Next Steps • Meeting with Egg producers in June • Contact MP’s who support the producers asking for a postponement • Continue ‘pressure strategy’ to all producers • Continue lobbying Ministry/KAFE • Contact the Super Markets informing them of the campaign and try to obtain their alignment and action • Produce campaign postcards for Greece to be sent to Minister in order to raise the final pressure • Set up a network of a information kiosk outside a leading super market chain • Any other useful schemes we can “implement” from our colleagues in the ENFAP Meeting!

  9. Next Steps-Proposals • International egg day • Cook shows/GAWF interviews • Good Egg Seal Endorsement

  10. THANK YOU! EFHARISTO!
