Animals during transport • Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 of 22 December 2004 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations and amending Directives 64/432/EEC and 93/119/EC and Regulation (EC) No 1255/97 • Only Article 35 of this Regulation will be implemented before 1 November 2011 – as it replaces paragraph 3 of Part II of Annex A to Directive 93/119/EC on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing – which is due to be implemented before 1 November 2011 due to JCD 133/2007.

Animals at the time of slaughter or killing • Council Directive 93/119/EC of 22 December 1993 on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing • Due to be implemented before 1 November 2011 due to JCD 133/2007 • Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 of 24 September 2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing • This Regulation has now repealed Council Directive 93/119/EC and is to apply from 1 January 2013.
Animal Welfare • There are two main Acts on AW in Iceland: • Act No 15/1994 on animal welfare • Act No 103/2002 on livestock management • These Act´s are under revision – with the aim to have: • One ministry responsible for AW • One Act on AW • One authority for AW – Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority
Animal Welfare • There are eight application regulations on AW • On the AW for horses • On the AW for cattle (under revision) • On the AW for sheep and goats • On the AW for pigs – (under revision) • On the AW for poultry • On the AW for fur animals • On the AW for rabbits • On the AW for animals used for scientific experiments implementing Dir. 86/609/EC - Dir. 2010/63/EU in EEA processing – will then be implemented
Animal Welfare • Three new regulations are in the pipeline: • Regulation for the transport of animals ( takes account of Commission Regulation (EC) No 1/2005) • Regulation for the humane killing of animals implementing 93/119/EC – (Commission Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 – in EEA processing – will then be implemented) • Commission Regulation (EC) No 710/2009 on organic aquaculture to be implemented
