  1. Access Prior Knowledge Lesson 4: Can resources be conserved? Opening Activity Open Science textbook to page 318. Open Science workbook to page 102A to review home learning. Open Science folder to review vocabulary words and outline for the chapter. Open Science journal and answer the following question: 1. What are some mineral resources and what do we use them for? Review Content Cards and Q-Cards in bin, sharing with partners quizzing each other
quietly. Log in to clickers using student ID number. Be ready to review home learning when timer goes off. Don't forget to write your
home learning in your
agenda page 103A.

  2. Do you agree with the statement? 1 It does not cost very much to clean up pollution. Yes No

  3. Do you agree with the statement? 2 You can reduce air pollution by using less electricity. Yes No

  4. Do you agree with the statement? 3 Many everyday items can be reused again and again. Yes No

  5. Do you agree with the statement? 4 The only purpose of recycling is to save materials. Yes No

  6. Repairing Soil, Water and Air The use of machines has caused air, soil, and water
pollution which has had a major effect on the
environment. Some towns have become so polluted that people had
to leave because the pollution was dangerous to people’s
health and removing pollution is very expensive. You cannot always see pollution in the environment,
therefore, scientists monitor pollution in the air, soil, and
water. Monitoring pollution can also help people find out where
pollution is coming from, and keep it from increasing. First paragraph pg. 318

  7. Conservation Laws There are laws to protect the natural resources. For example,
businesses in many areas have to plant new trees to replace trees
they cut down and some factories must clean the lands they pollute. Other laws have set aside land to be used as national parks these
parks protect environments. First paragraph pg. 319

  8. Using Less and Reusing Resources We can help by using less resources, for example turning off
lights when we leave the room also reduces air pollution
because the power plant doesn’t have to make more electricity. People and businesses can also reuse resources. You can
reuse the back of paper. Some businesses help people reuse things by selling used
goods, for example some companies reuse old computer parts
and old tires can be reused to make playground surfaces or a
tire swing. Second paragraph pg. 319

  9. Recycling Recycling is treating or changing something so it can be used
again. Glass, paper and plastic can all be recycled in many ways: 1. Plastic is collected, then sorted in a recycling center. 2. Next, the containers are chopped into flakes and washed
and dried. 3. Finally the flakes are tumbled dried and melted to form
new things. Recycling can save materials and can also save energy. For
example, there is a large supply of aluminum in the Earth, but it
takes less energy to recycle aluminum than it does to get
aluminum from a mine. First paragraph pg. 320 Recycling

  10. MatchQuest Steps to recycle plastic Sent to a machine to be chopped Containers are sorted Flakes are dried by tumbling them in the air Flakes are melted and formed into new things Collect the plastic Flakes are washed

  11. TextQuest Answer the questions in your Science journal. 1. Give some examples of reusing resources. 2. Why should we recycle aluminum even though there is more to be found? 3. What is an example of conservation laws? Don't forget to write your
home learning in your
agenda page 103A.
