Workshop objective • To explore how an innovative telehealth e-module was developed by a public/private sector partnership and to share; • the content and structure of the module • feedback and evaluations from individual learners and organisations • strategies for adoption and sustainability of the module in HEIs and service • how learning from the project is supporting the development of other learning objects • There will be audience participation throughout!

Health Innovation & Education Clusters proposed May 2009 Breakthrough to Real Change ‘partnerships between NHS , higher education , industry and other private and public organisations’ ‘quickly bringing benefits of research and innovation directly to patients’ 'increasing quality through implementing best practice' ‘strengthening co-ordination of education and training’ December 2010First Health Innovation and Education Clusters launched

Why focus on Telehealth? • Strategic alignment: Yorkshire and the Humber SHA were already investing in telehealth innovation • Political support for telehealth was growing • Strengthening economic case for telehealth • ageing population • increasing prevalence of LTCs • need for new models of care • self-management agenda • care closer to home • cost-effective alternative to hospital and GP surgery

  6. March 2011 The Government's Plan for Growth, was issued alongside the Budget statement. It includes: • Assistive living technologies (often referred to as ‘telecare’ and ‘telehealth’) enable health and social care services to be provided remotely, for example by monitoring vital health signs and using sensors to detect movement or falls. Barriers; • lack of properly evaluated evidence, • high cost per unit • low levels of awareness of the benefits this technology can bring. • Emerging WSD project findings to provide the evidence base • The Government is committed to improving the take up of assisted living technology • Aims - achieve scale and bring down cost per unit. • work with the Technology Strategy Board to develop assisted living solutions through supporting R&D, collaboration, innovation and interoperability of service models through an £18 million investment programme across a range of UK sites; • make purchasers, individuals, retailers and government, more confident of assistive technology. • To achieve this, the Government will help establish a code of practicethat can set a standard framework for services and technology, led by industry, toprovide quality assurance to customers and increase uptake; and work with the industry to reduce costs and make GP commissioners and new Local Authority Health and Well Being Boards aware of the benefits of this new technology. http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/ukecon_growth_index.htm

HIEC Telehealth for LTC: Project Objectives April 2011 • To develop an introductory Telehealth and Telecare education package for staff and service users/carers • To produce practical resources/toolkit for managers & commissioners developing telehealth services • To provide consultancy and expertise to support the rapid implementation of telehealth services

Development Process April to November 2011 • face to face workshops and teleconferencing • initial scoping and agreement of content • storyboard for structure of learning package • academic review & contribution of evidence base/reading/additional information sources • case studies and vignettes sourced from established service providers • review sessions (language, emphasis etc) • pilot phase and further product/technical refinements

Feedback - corporate Nottingham City Homes has developed ‘Nottingham On Call’ a call centre supporting over 12,000 homes in the effective use of their telecare equipment.  These properties include the Sheltered Accommodation managed by Nottingham City Homes and the service also offers outsourcing to private homes and other Housing Associations.  The module will be offered to all call centre staff and mobile support officers (the people who go into homes to assess people’s needs and then install the equipment). ‘This is the only course we were able to find that effectively met the needs of our staff.  E-Learning is the most cost effective and resource efficient way of training the team working in this prolific service area.’

  20. Feedback - learners “When i found the course was aimed at such a wide range of people iorigenally thought how is this going to work and be satisfactory for everyone. However the use of learning outcomes aided this, along with the layout of the modules ie. i was able to go into as much or as little detail as i liked through clicking on certain parts within the screen.” “Course info was well and logically arranged. Animation and resources beautifully presented. Very balanced amount (not too less, not too much) of learning material; it was easy to keep focused.” “The presentation of information was very knowledge-enhancing.” “A fantastic and comprehensive introduction to the subject presented in an extremely well structured way” “Would be interesting to see more information and demonstrations about what products are actually out there in the real world, how they work, and the potential benefits to the clinicians and organisations who employ them.”

Response to feedback • Feedback suggested that accreditation by the RCN would be helpful - Applied for and secured. • Feedback from RCN required no changes; • “From an educational perspective this is a useful, valuable, valid learning resource for both nursing and social care.” • An Advisory Panel regularly reviews feedback and changes are implemented where required • General feedback – module is more health than social care focussed. Response is to develop a care version • Requests for further resources – in process of creating a development plan.

Curriculum development: Hull University • Two post-registration e-learning modules (Telehealth and Telecare – Levels 6 and 7) launched September 2010 • Short programmes (PgCert Telehealth and Telecare) due for launch 2011/12 • Virtual College module embedded into pre-registration nursing programme from May 2011 • 2nd year students provided with directed study time and module registration details • Completion checked against class register • Early research findings suggest that the module raises awareness and understanding of telehealth and telecare

Sheffield Hallam University • We are embedding the module into pre-registration inter-professional learning - Nursing, AHPs • Sits alongside another learning package 'Systems of e-care' developed in-house • Both modules have been very favourably received by the Nursing and Midwifery Lead, Clinical Division of the DH Directorate of Informatics • Adding value to the curriculum and enhancing the employability of our graduates • Next step - installing telehealth simulation at SHU

  37. Virtual College work on qualifications • Currently reviewing SQA requirements for Scottish Centre for Telehealthcare to ensure alignment with developing qualifications • Already mapping to UK qualifications such as Apprenticeship in Housing
