  2. poised When you are poised for action, you are ready to get started. If you are standing on a diving board, what are you poised to do? 1. jump in the water 2. go inside

  3. earnestly Someone who speaks earnestly says things in an especially serious and honest way. If a friend earnestly said that she didn’t mean to tear your poster, would you believe her? Thumbs up = yes; Thumbs down = no

  4. insufficient If something is insufficient, there is not enough of it or it is not good enough to meet the need. When might a teaspoon of sugar be insufficient? Turn and tell your partner. Begin your sentence like this: “A teaspoon of sugar might be insufficient when…”

  5. exceptional Something that is exceptional is special, and it stands above others like it. What is an exceptional movie you have seen? Turn and tell your partner. Begin your sentence like this: “An exceptional movie I have seen is _____. It was exceptional because…”

  6. achievement An achievement is the result of a successful effort. Is finishing a jigsaw puzzle an achievement? Thumbs up = yes; Thumbs down = no Turn and tell your partner. Begin your sentence like this: “Finishing a jigsaw puzzle is an achievement because …”

  7. bickering People who are bickering are arguing about something unimportant. About what topic might you find two friends bickering? Turn and tell your partner. Begin your sentence like this: “Two friends might be bickering about…”

  8. equivalent Things that are equivalent are equal. How many days is equivalent to one week? Think… Ready? Answer chorally.

  9. regal If something is regal, it is fit for a king or queen. What might a regal costume look like? 1. plain and ordinary 2. fancy and extravagant

  10. customary Something that is customary is what is usual or normal. What is your customary wake-up time? Turn and tell your partner. Form your sentence like this: “My customary wake-up time is _____.”

  11. provoke When you provoke someone, you do something to make him or her feel angry. What might a cat do to provoke a dog? 1. wake him suddenly 2. ignore him
