  1. What makes music….music? There is no right or wrong answer….but there are a few things that we can talk about that are found in all music

  2. How does music enhance our lives? • Allows the musician to express himself/herself • Allows the listener an “emotional” response • Adds to movies, television and other media forms • Communicates ideas • Can aid in creating mood

  3. How do we LISTEN to music? • Levels of attentiveness (be able to define and give examples) • Oblivious listening……define and give examples • Casual listening • Sensuous listening • Perceptive listening

  4. Listening Activity Listen to an excerpt from John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March” and tell what kind of listener you would be!!! Page 52 in your text!!

  5. Intervals and scales • Listening example: • Harry Connick Jr. Scales– sequence of tones arranged in rising pitches…. Intervals—the distance between two tones….. Harry Connick Jr.
