  2. Spheres of Influence • Time of Imperialism was not good for Chinese • British, French and Japanese occupation • Japan’s Invasions take a heavy toll • Population is mostly Peasant Farmers

  3. Nationalists • Chiang Kai-Shek • In charge of • Kuomintang: Nationalist group • Wanted to continue capitalist market • Purged Kuomintang of Communists • Forced to Flee Nanking when Japanese attacked

  4. Communists • Mao Zedong left Kuomintang • Started Jiangxi: Soviet • Studied and was inspired by Lenin • Tweaked Soviet Formula to fit China • Poor Farmers • Apply to the Countryside rather than cities & towns • Starts to fight • 8,000 mile March • 30,000 of 100,000 survive

  5. Temporary Peace • Mao and Chiang see Japanese as a greater threat • Join forces to fight Japanese invasion during World War II • Fighting Continues after the war

  6. Great Leap • Mao’s forces win • Chiang flees to island of Taiwan to set up his government in exile • Mao wins control of China and Communism is implemented • Farms are collectivized and private ownership is eliminated • Famine kills 25 million lives because of low productivity

  7. Cultural Revolution • Everything old must go • Chinese Tradition is erased • Only Communist ideas, writings and philosophy are allowed • Little Red Books • Purges of scholars • Emperor: Kicked out • Burning of Books
