Materials needed • Crazy Like a Fox by Loreen Leedy • Construction paper • Scissors • Glue • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils • Cotton balls, pompoms, feathers, sequins, sand paper, foam board, eyes, and felt (optional)
Lesson procedure • Introduce the lesson and why it is important to learn about similes • Explain and define similes, and show different examples • Read Crazy Like a Fox • Brainstorm objects that students can compare and create similes with • For example: Hungry horse, Quiet mouse • These examples can turn into similes by adding like or as • The boy was as hungry as a horse. • The girl is as quiet as a mouse. • Students will create their own simile and illustrate it. If they have trouble coming up with an idea, they can choose the comparisons we brainstormed as a class. • Students will take turns sharing their similes with the class. • After everyone shares, we can create a class book of similes to put in your classroom library, or display the similes on a bulletin board.
What are similes? • Figure of Speech • Compare two different objects using like or as • He sleeps like a log. • You’re as smart as a whip. • She’s as hungry as a horse.
Activity! • Create your own simile • Use the list we just brainstormed if you have trouble • Draw a picture that goes along with your simile • Use different materials to illustrate: • Cotton balls • PomPoms • Sequins • Feathers • Foam Board • Eyes • Sand Paper • Felt
