EXAMPLE • A piece of stock that is 1” thick, 12” wide and 10’ long would contain 10 Board Feet.
FORMULA FOR CALCULATING BOARD FEET 1 Bd. Ft. = # of pcs. x T” x W” x L” 144
ALWAYS ROUND THE FINISH THICKNESS UP!!!! • Stock that is LESS THAN 1” thick is ALWAYS referred to as 1” when calculating Board feet. (Eg. Stock that is ¾” thick is changed to 1” when calculating Board Feet). • Stock that is OVER 1” thick is calculated to the nearest quarter. (Eg. A piece of stock that is 1 ¼” thick would be changed to 1 ½” or (6/4) when calculating Board feet).
SELLING ROUGH LUMBER • Rough Lumber is SOLD by the NEAREST QUARTER in THICKNESS. • Stock that is 1” thick when it is rough is referred to as 4/4 (Four Quarter) • Stock that is 1 ½” thick when it is rough is referred to as 6/4 (Six Quarter)
THE PRICE OF ROUGH LUMBER • Rough Lumber is PRICED by a thousand (1000) Bd. Ft. • We purchase 4/4 pine that is priced at $1,250.00 per thousand (1000) Bd. Ft. • Therefore 1 Bd. Ft. of 4/4 pine would cost $1.25
