  2. Invercargill • The city of Invercargill is at the bottom of the South Island. • The town was established in the 1850s and a port was established in Bluff, the southern most tip of the South Island.

  3. Invercargill • The town was called Invercargill because the Governor of New Zealand, at the time, wanted to name it after William Cargill as a tribute. Inver comes from the Gaelic word ‘inbhir’ meaning a river’s mouth and Cargill was in honour of Captain William Cargill who was at the time the Superintendant of Otago which what is now known as Southland was a part of.

  4. Invercargill • Invercargill is the centre of a huge farming area. The weather is known for being cold and rainy. • The population of Invercargill is approximately 30,000.

  5. Invercargill • Invercargill is a beautiful city with lots of tourist attractions. It has an Art Gallery with lots of good art in it. Queen’s Park is in the centre of the city and is a very large park with lots of trees and flowers.

Invercargill A number of famous people are from Invercargill: • Peter Arnett – NBC war correspondent • Marton Czokas – actor • Mils Muliaina – All Black captain • Anton Oliver – All Black captain • Garfield Todd – PM of Rhodesia • Victor Spencer – last soldier to be executed (pardoned in 2005) • Bill Crawford-Crompton – Silver Star, Air Vice Marshall and WWI Commander
