  1. Real Clinical Case Acupuncture For Bed-Wetting

  2. Introduction • Bed-wetting refers to a disease in which the child over 3 years old cannot control his urination at night. Generally it is self-cured at the age of 16 or 17 years old. But some cases are not self-cured. The patients are accompanied with sallow complexion and listlessness.

  3. Causative factors • Bed-wetting is closely related with the congenital deficiency. Internal Classic says that the kidney dominates water and controls opening and closing of orifices, and it is the congenital foundation. The development and growth of the body depend on the nourishment of kidney essence and propelling of kidney qi. The congenital deficiency can cause the retarded development of urination functions, leading to bed-wetting.

  4. symptoms • The control of urinary bladder is weak due to kidney deficiency, thus the patient urinates without aware of it. • They have the increased volume of urine, frequent urination, mental retardation, and deep sleep not easily waken up, meaning that they have kidney deficiency and poor reaction of brain to urination desire.

  5. Example case • A girl of 11 years old began to have bed-wetting since she was 4 years old. Every night she made bed wet 2-3 times and sometimes she also went to toilet to pass urine 1-2 times. Her sleep was so deep that she couldn’t be waken up. • During daytime, she had urgent urination after each class. She had seldom sweating. Her complexion was sallow.

  6. Treatment • Points: • Fengchi (GB 20) • Fengmen (BL 12) • Zhongji (CV 3) • Shenshu (BL 23) • Taixi (KI 3) • Sanyinjiao (SP 6). • This group of points has the functions to promote resuscitation of brain, sweating and reinforce kidney.

  7. After the first time of acupuncture treatment, at the first and second night, she woke up and went to pass urine. At the third night, she had bed-wetting once again, but the quantity of urine was obviously reduced. • Later, she had only two times of bed-wetting due to drinking of water before going to bed. She could wake up by herself at night to go to toilet. • With two months’ treatment she didn’t have bed-wetting at night any more. During daytime, her sweating increased, urination frequency decreased, no urgent urination. Her complexion was getting rosy gradually.
