  1. Network Evolution Stategy in a fixed line telco: what role and opportunities for NGN/IMS PT Comunicações

  2. Telecoms and multimedia International Public owned Customer Voice + data + video Interactivity Diversified Group 42 million customers 1995 | 2006 Telecoms Domestic State owned Technology Voice Telephony Company 3.7 million customers

  3. An integrated telecom and multimedia operator with a leading position in its two strategic markets Portugal > offer a full range of voice, video and data services Brazil > mobile market Significant positions in other markets like Morocco, Angola, Macao and other Portuguese speaking countries PT Group

  4. Structure and management • Five business areas which correspond to five large core areas and support companies • The business units are coordinated by the Group holding, led by its Executive Committee, with the support of the Corporate Centre Portugal Telecom Mobile Multimedia Wireline Internationalbusiness Support companies

  5. Our customers Wireline Mobile 4.5 million 35.1 million Pay-TV (Cable) Broadband 1.5 million 933 thousand

  6. Drop of traffic and revenues, force fixed network operators to review their business strategic The turn around of this situation, requires an aggressive move towards Broadband and a new service-oriented vision.

  7. Network infraestructure must be fitted to new business challenges and to do so we’ll need to use new tecnologies. However, PT has to maintain its legacy networks so this change must be non disruptive.

  8. New services will be about: Value added Ease of use Contents Entertainement

  9. What kind of network can support this strategy? • Focus on services rather than connectivity • Flexibility and reduced time to market • A single structure that supports multiple services • Potential for cost optimization

  10. WHY NGN/IMS Architecture Multimedia/Multi-service New services, Services Integration, Personalization Fixed and Mobile Networks Common Standard(Core IMS) Interoperability with Legacy and other NGN Networks, Mobility, Flexibility, Convergence (FMC) Agnostic Access Wireless and Wireline access networks, Mobility, Fixed and Mobile Terminals Source: ETSI TISPAN

  11. PSTN/ISDN Simulation/Emulation IMS Sub-system (“Core IMS”) provides the SIP Supplementary Services (“PSTN/ISDN Simulation”) PSTN/ISDN Emulation Sub-system (PES) supports the emulation of PSTN/ISDN services for legacy terminals connected to NGN, through residential or access gateways. PES is a relevant sub-system for Fixed Operators because it allows: • PSTN replacement • Gradual migration with minimum impact on the subscriber side • Easier migration of PSTN/ISDN subscribers to native SIP subscribers. Source: ETSI TISPAN

  12. NGN/IMS Architecture- when and how to deploy? • Challenges/Issues • User profiles in a central location • Voice Call Continuity • Regulation (Lawful Interception, Data Privacy, Emergency Calls, Number Portability, Bundling of Services) • Network security • Resources optimization • QoS for real time services • OSS and BSS development/integration

  13. Availability of products and maturity of solutions Impacts on Investments? What services? “All services you can imagine ...”

  14. Fixed – Mobile Convergence Challenge for the Operator Any service on any access, any device, any location, any time

  15. Enterprise Intranet Public Wireless LAN Hotspots Public GSM/GPRS UMTS Broadband Internet at Home PSTN/ISDN at Home Personalized environment of attractive services  increase customer loyalty Same look and feel on various devices  more acceptance and usage

  16. Fixed – Mobile Convergence • Fixed Network: • Higher Quality • Low Cost • Higher Bandwidth • Mobile Network: • Personalisation • Mobility • Handsets Convergence The Best of Two Worlds FMC will provide several business benefits for integrated operators: • Improved customer retention and reduced marketing costs through reduced churn • Reduced network costs (Capex and Opex) • New revenues with converged services • Decrease churn rate offering a seamless user experience across all networks NGN/IMS Architecture  “Key Enabler” for FMC

  17. Portugal Telecom START POINT: MPLS/IP Core Network, with services certified by the MEF (metro ethernet forum) Voip solution for enterprise and residential market Optical Transmission (core and access) xDSL access network

  18. Next steps: • GPON test and trial • New IMS control layer by the end of 2007. • MSAN tests • VDSL2 introduction.
