Acid-Base Equilibria (1) (1) Gary D. Christian, Analytical Chemistry, 6th edition.
By the end of this lecture, you should be able to: • Define the pH of a solution. • Calculate the pH of strong acids. • Calculate the pH of strong bases.
What is a pH scale? The pH of a solution was defined as: pH = - log [H+] Similar definition is made for the [OH-]: pOH = - log [OH-]
pKw = pH + pOH at 25oC 14 = pH + pOH
[H+] = [OH-] the solution is neutral (pH=7). • [H+] [OH-] the solution is acidic (pH 7). • [H+] [OH-] the solution is alkaline (pH 7).
