Bell Ringer (Tue) 5-20-2014 • Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America. • When his home state of Mississippi seceded from the Union in January of 1861, Davis resigned as Secretary of War only to be appointed and then elected the first president of the Confederate States of America.

  3. Bell Ringer (Fri.) 5-23-2014 • In 1863, the Union instituted conscription, also called the draft, to meet the unending demand for fresh troops.
