Welcome to Long Beach Middle School 8th Grade Science
Organization is imperative. It is your job to keep up with your work; it is your responsibility. Please be sure you have pens, pencils and paper. I do not provide these as a service to you! Be prepared for class with supplies and completed lessons. The following tabs should be set up in your science notebook. 1. Bellwork 2. Calendar 3. Daily paperwork 4. Long Term 5. Keep Forever Your Toolkit
Textbooks for Science • You will not be issued a book to take home; we only have a classroom set. • You will have ample time to complete your assignments if you use your time wisely. • An online book is available for you to use. • We will go over instructions for accessing the online edition together in class at another time.
Lesson Presentation • lecture • video presentations • teacher demonstrations • student based labs • computer generated presentations (powerpoints) • computer guided lessons (CPS) • class discussion • note taking • independent study • small group presentations.
Lab Work • Labs will correlate with the concepts taught within the unit and with Mississippi’s core curriculum. • You will receive a participation grade for the lab. • Occasionally, you may be graded on individual work for labs. • Labs cannot be made up, but will be excused with appropriate documentation.
Make-Up Work • It is your responsibility to collect make up work. • When you ask me for your work, I will give it to you. • It is your responsibility to check with me to see if make up work should be turned in for credit. • You will have the number of days you were absent to complete and turn in make up work.
Classwork and Homework • Assignments are expected on the due date. • Late work will not be accepted. • You are strongly encouraged to keep the work in your notebook as reference material for tests. • NEVER throw anything away If it needs to be trashed, I’ll let you know! • We will purge your notebook after each unit to create a file of your work to keep in class.
Tests • Tests will be announced 3-5 days in advance. • I encourage you to review material covered in class each night. This doesn’t take long I will break it down for you every day. • 10-15 minutes of review will go a long way in helping you retain material pertinent to tests.
Agenda Use • Writing in your planner or on your calendar is your responsibility. • It allows you to document important information about upcoming tests, extra credit and daily assignments. • Wonderful tool for organization!
Yeah. This Stuff. • Electronic devices such as cell phones and iPods are not allowed in my classroom unless I give specific permission to use them as a resource. • If you insist and are “caught” they will be taken and turned in to the office. **Consequences… • You will not be allowed to chew gum, bring in drinks or eat snacks of any kind in my classroom.
Procedure • Sharpen your pencil if needed. • Pick up paperwork for the day from the bin. • Take class material and supplies from your bookbag. • Hang your bookbag on the back of your chair. Zip it up. • Write in your planner/calendar. • Begin following instructions on the “Today” board.
Using Good Manners • Hold all questions until I finish the roll. • Hold all paperwork until I call for it. • When I am speaking to another student or to an adult…do not interrupt. • Hold all trash until the end of class. • Stay seated when instruction is taking place or someone is addressing our class. • We will remain quiet during announcements.
Expectations • I expect you to come to class ready to participate and learn. • I expect you to do your best 100% of the time. • I expect your attention. • I expect you to treat everyone in my class with common courtesy and kindness. • I expect you to spend whatever time is needed for success. • I expect us to have a great time learning new things together
PBIS • I will take a few minutes to discuss PBIS with you. • Pride Points • Documentation form • Interventions • Expectations • Incentives • Boogie on the Beach
Class Motto • If you expect RESPECT, be the first to give it!
