Basic Information • S.T.A.A.R. - State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness • Began in Spring 2012 • Results from 2012 arrived in January 2013 • sending home with progress reports on February 15 • Grades 3-5 are assessed at the elementary level • 5th Grade Reading and Math are subject to S.S.I. (Student Success Initiative) requirements • Must pass STAAR to be promoted to 6th grade • 5th grade students get three chances to pass • Additional remediation is provided if your child does not meet the passing standard in 5th grade

TAKS vs. STAARWhat’s the difference? • Rigor: STAAR will have a greater focus on college and career readiness. • Vertical alignment of performance standards across grades and linked to post secondary readiness • End of Course-based assessments at high school – (EOC) • Increased number of test items • A four-hour time limit • Assessments administered over two days: Writing- Grades 4 • Increased number of open-ended (griddable) items • More focus on what has historically been the most difficult standards

  4. STAAR 2013 Dates Try not to schedule appointments during testing weeks

Texas Education AgencyNew Accountability System • We will not receive an accountability rating based on the 2012 results • The new accountability system is in DRAFT form and will begin with the 2013 STAAR results • Results from 2013 STAAR scores should be received by the end of May 2013 • Schools will either be acceptable or unacceptable • No longer classified as Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable or Unacceptable

Garden Ridge Elementary STAAR Cut Scores 2012 (Handout) • Level II Satisfactory (Passing at Phase I) Student Passing Rate • Final Standard (also referred to as Panel Recommendation) • Will be applied for campus and district accountability beginning this year for Index #1 • Will eventually be the passing standard (no date yet) • Level III Advanced • Will be applied for campus and district accountability beginning in 2013-2014 for Index #4 at elementary and middle school • Cut scores are different for every grade level & subject area test Example: 2012- 3rd Grade Reading Level II (Phase 1) – 50% 2012 – 3rd Grade Reading Level II (Final) – 75% 2012- 3rd Grade Reading Level III (Advanced Academic Performance) 85%
